About 83km north from Townsville, you will find this magical oasis where you can relax in the cool mountain air on a hot day. Crystal Creek runs for 17.5 km, beginning just below Paluma, Queensland, flowing through the township of Mutarnee and emptying into the Coral Sea. Here you will find Little Crystal Creek and Big Crystal Creek. We decided to go to the Little one for this day trip as it was already 2pm when we arrived.
The drive up is windey along narrow roads, so take caution and drive the speed limit as a card could easily be heading the opposite way. We came along two school buses. Oh and dont expect phone reception here 🙂
The Little Crystal Creek Bridge is a stone-faced arch bridge built in 1932 and is the only arch road bridge that remains in service in Queensland. The pools are filled with clear water flowing down the creek, making it a great natural swimming hole to cool off in.
Enjoy a day out having a picnic or a BBQ, use the rocks as slides (very slippery in some places), and bring good shoes if planning to hike. I made us chicken sandwiches before we left, packed some fruiut and some orange juice boxes and took it all in a cooler bag. When we got to the picnic area we were greeted by very hungry turkeys. One chased all the others away, so we gave a little to him.
We left about 4pm as we could feel the mosquito’s coming out and biting us. I highly recommend this place for a half day/full day with the family or friends. We went on a weekday when it wasn’t school holidays and think we just missed the school kids as they were leaving so getting there after lunch time was a great idea and was almost empty.
